Not too many people think about where the food in a quick serve restaurant really came from. The answer quite often is a company that not too many people outside the food processing business have heard of which is OSI Food Solutions. This company is actually one of the largest food companies in the country, creating food products for many well-known brands such as Subway, Starbucks, Mcdonald’s, and Burger King. They have food production facilities in 17 nations and employ more than 20,000 people. They are based in Aurora, Illinois, which is a suburb of Chicago. Since the 1970s, OSI Food Solutions has been expanding internationally. Over the past few years, Europe has been a big focus of this company.
In order to expand their footprint there and enter new markets, they have acquired a few European companies of late. The first of these was a Dutch food processing company, Baho Foods. With this purchase, OSI Food Solutions was able to enter more Eastern European markets. OSI Food Solutions also bought another European company recently which was Flagship Europe (since renamed Creative Foods Europe). This purchase included a number of brands such as Calder Foods, House of Lords, Oasis Mayonnaise, and Oliver James Foods.
This company was also recently honored by the British Safety Council when they were named as one of the winners of the Globe of Honour. Increasing the production capacity of some of their food processing facilities has also been a focus in recent years. One example of this is their facility in the Philippines. They added on 7,500 square meters to this plant which made it much more efficient. Similarly, they upgraded and expanded their plant in Toledo, Spain. This facility was able to double the amount of chicken they process which was needed to meet growing demand. Among the other improvements was the addition of a testing kitchen, energy efficiency upgrades, and additional food safety measures being installed.
